I don’t share a lot of personal stuff on here, but I really need to some help. If you’re the religious type, I’ll take your prayers, and any and all positive vibes from everyone else. Personal content after the jump.

Kinja'd!!!

I have one bolt left to go before I can separate my engine and transmission in order to swap my clutch. This fucker

will.

not.

budge.

I’ve got an impact wrench on it that’s supposed to be hitting at 800 lbs. There’s only a 10” extension on it, so most of that torque should be making it to the bolt. I jacked the transmission back up to relieve tension on it, but no dice. I’m hoping my wrench is just toast, as it sure doesn’t feel like it is hitting too hard, and I was able to do all the other bolts by hand. I ordered an Aircat 1150, so hopefully it does the trick. Send thoughts and prayers, Oppo, or I’m gonna burn this fucking Jeep to the ground. Here’s a video of my efforts:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m gonna cream my panties when this fucking bolt finally loosens.

Me earlier trying to remove the god-damned bracket that holds the ignition assembly into place on the Integra in the blazing heat and sun while inside a tiny black car and with a screwdriver and hammer since we didn't have any fancy tools at all today...good god it took us hours just to remove the two small ass bolts and I wasn't fucking having it until I raged and banged it incessantly until it came off.

Probably a dumb question, did you soak it in penetrating oil already?

My God. I had no idea you were going through this in silence. I’m sorry man :(

Okay so anyway, if you’re not in a rush, the least-expensive method is to blast it with penetrating oil — I mean BLASTING — and waiting until the following morning and trying all over again. This is usually what I do since I’m not handy and don’t have many tools... I will say it works almost every time for me... Also, lots of prayer.

Soak it in penetrating oil and leave it overnight. Take a break from it. It'll do wonders.

I’ve got an impact wrench on it that’s supposed to be hitting at 800 lbs. There’s only a 10” extension on it, so most of that torque should be making it to the bolt.

that 10" extension is probably robbing you of half your impact power. Try a 6" or 4" extension if you can squeeze the impact wrench in any closer to the bolt.

Are you using any swivel/U-joints? Every extension or adapter between the square drive of the wrench and the socket itself will rob you of more and more impact force.

Can send weapons of mass destruction. Sometimes different guns work simply because of the difference in impact frequency. Before that, try Aerokroil. I’ve seen that stuff work magic on the most recalcitrant fasteners, succeeding where all other penetrants, heat, and force have failed. It’s expensive, but it is so worth it. If there’s any way to shorten that extension or get a straighter shot at it, do so. Also, you might try giving it a slight, brief rap in the other direction (or do so manually) , then trying to loosen again. Best of luck in this trying time.

Failing that, I’ll stand by for the Viking funeral.

Seconding what everyone else said

Heat the bolt, penetrating oil, less extensions.

Do es your air compressor even move enough air to meet the minimum CFM requirements on that big impact?

I would, but Daimler-Chrysler, in all their wisdom, routed hard  plastic fuel lines right in from of the bolt.

I bought the truck with only 30k miles on it, and the pilot bearing started eating itself at 50k, so I’m pretty sure I’m the first one in here. Apparently this is a known issue with this engine and trans. Someone in Toledo wanted to fuck with people.

It’s been soaking in penetrating oil all week, and this bolt also holds the fuel line bracket. The lines are hard plastic and run right in front of the bolt, so heat isn’t an option.

I actually found a thread where the guy ended up removing the front clip and the engine and trans together...to do the clutch...

Try deep creep if you haven’t, much better than pb blaster in my experience.

A more risky approach is to spray pb blaster and then hit it with a propane torch. Apparently the blaster get into the rust and the flame clears it out. Makes a lotta nasty smoke tho and there is always the risk that you'll burn down the car. My friend used this technique to change his header at 150k miles so I guess it works?

Gonna grab some aerokroil. Stuff sounds like a Soviet chemical weapon.

This is reminding me why I stopped buying American. For all their faults, all my German cars have always been torqued to spec. I’m guessing there some disgruntled worker/robot in Toledo torquing all the too transmission bolts to kingdom come.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately this is the least torque sapping method that will still let me get anything on the bolt. This wrench is five years old and I haven’t been good about maintenance. Hopefully a fresh start with a bigger wrench will give me the torques I need.

If the case is made of steel, try tightening a bolt or two on the opposite side, then hitting the case by that stuck bolt with some form of deadblow hammer. You could have oxidation or some form of chemical bind that not only stops it from turning but is keeping the penetrating oil from getting through the thre ads.

Our resident BMW surgeon pointed me towards some weapons grade stuff. There are hard plastic fuel lines routed right in front of the bolt, so heat is a no go.

This is more of an overtorqued issue than a rust issue, as the truck has been in AZ its whole life.

This is a transmission bolt, so its on a stud that’s threaded into the  iron block. The truck has been in AZ its whole life, and I was able to remove all the other bolts by hand with a 3/8” wrench, so I’m guessing this fucked was just overtorqued in Toledo. Seems to be a common issue on the 3.8L Jeeps.

Breaker bar with a pipe extension and a big  hammer. This always works. Something breaks. The wrench or the bolt.

to my calibrated ear, you have maybe 400ft-lb coming out of that ugga dugga. you should a) put some light oil through the inlet port of the air wrench and give it a good no-load spin to see if it runs freeer and b) crank up the compressor to the max psi.

If neither of those work and penetrating oil doesn’t work, consider renting a bigger compressor and/or a bigger air wrench, possibly one with an extended nose like this so you don’t need the long extension:

I’d still try putting a bolt back in somewhere else. If it’s overtorqued AND the only bolt holding it together, it might be under extra stresses because of this so that might help loosen it a bit.

Looks like you’re sorted out already.

My favorite penetrating lubricant is

Schaeffer Manufacturing Co. 0190-011S Penetro 90, 13 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JF2LI28/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DHRdEbN1CZ1FM

And I’ve wanted to try this out

https://www.lelubricants.com/lubricants/aerosol-lubricants/

The 2059.

Schaeffer's is top notch and continues to dissolve rust well after the frozen parts are freed.

I’ve had too many moments beating my head against the wall that when heater cores, transmissions, or differential gears need replacing, I end up taking it to a shop. Been there. Done that. Taken days to do a job, only to fuck it up in the end.
